DIY Christmas Gift Ideas with Essential Oils

Print

Looking for some good ideas for Christmas gifts? Want to share your love for essential oils with your family and friends? Then this class is for you!!! We will go over some fun DIY ‘s that you can make and give out. How about to your mail man or mail women, kids teachers, hairstylist, groomer, chiropractor, or whomever you want to say thank you for being there this past year. I can’t wait to make these and I hope y’all enjoy them too.

OK let’s get started

I love taking baths, especially on cold winter nights with a cup of hot tea. Plus they are great for detoxing. Add a bath bomb with Stress Away and you have one happy girl 🙂

PrintPrint

Does your skin get dry over the winter months? I know mine does and it’s no fun. This bath soak helps to soothe your dry skin making it feel nourished and moisturized again. Aaahhhhh

Print

I know during the holidays when I get to the bedroom all I want to do is crash on my pillow and not move again for another 10 hours. But with the holidays also comes more parties and that means more makeup. I hate going to bed with my makeup on but I know when I’m tired it happens more then I like. These quick eye make up remover pads are great for those nights when I need to get my makeup off quickly before I crash out. Also they do it with no yucky chemicals!!!

Print

Now this DIY takes a little more work and planing but the rewards are great. I think a few homemade hand soaps with some new hand towels is the perfect Christmas gift for someone, don’t you?

Print

Oh my gosh I am so excited about this recipe. My kids love bubble bath but hate all the harsh chemicals in them. This is such a great gift to make your kids . You can add a couple plastic toys in the bottle and it makes it even more fun. Or keep it simple and give it to a friend.

Print

We made some of these and hung them in our fake Christmas tree. So many people thought our tree was real because they could smell it. This is such a great way to make your home smell like a real one but still have the convenience of a fake one. Especially when you live in a dry climate and a real one only last a week 😦

Print

One of my favorite things to do at Christmas is make cookies and goodies to give away. I am not a big fan of the frosting covered cookies, although we have found a pretty amazing recipe, but I prefer to step out of the tradition cookies box and do different things. These next few post will give you some ideas to share Young Living in tasty treats. How about peppermint brownies made with the peppermint vitality oil!?! All I can say is YUM!!!!!!!

I think Santa might like these too.

Print

If your looking for a great dish to take to that friends Christmas party, this is it. An Herb Cheeseball Spread. Not only is it delish infused with vitality oils, but what a great way to share about oils. WIN, WIN!!

Print

Now with all the gifts made and the parties over, it’s time to snuggle up in front of the fireplace and sip a cup of Spiced Holiday Cider. Go ahead, you deserve it!

Of course, one last thing before we end this class, is to share some blends that are amazing for making your home smell like the Christmas Season with these amazing diffuser blends.

Silver Retreat

My Memories From The Silver Retreat

fb_img_1475368777094

This trip was amazing.  I am so blessed to have been able to go. I wanted to share some of my memories with y’all. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

A few things I learned on the Silver Retreat.

This company has So Much Heart.

I was blown away at how nice they treated us. From great meals, the ones at the farm week the Bomb, to fun experiences, to learning new and great things.  But what stood out the most was how much heart Gary and Mary Young have for others. One way they show this is through the D. Gary Young Foundation.  Here are a few of the projects that this foundation are working on right now.

  • Rebuild Nepal
  • Young Living Academy Ecuador
  • Meastral Orphanage Croatia
  • Hope for Justice
  • African Hope
  • Sole Hope
  • Healing Faith Uganda
  • Ecuador Earthquake Relief
  • And recently with the Louisiana Flood Relief

You can earn more about these projects at younglivingfoudation.org

By completely covering the foundations administrative costs, Young Living ensures that 100% of the donations go directly to helping with the projects.

But it doesn’t stop there.  This is not a foundation where the top people sit behind desks and tell other to go. No, Gary Young himself is out there helping and meeting the needs of those he has a heart for.

How can you help?

You shop. Amazon gives.

Did you know that the online retailer Amazon.com has a program called AmazonSmile that allows you to give The D. Gary Young, Young Living Foundation a portion of your order’s proceeds? It’s a simple and automatic way for you to support the foundation every time you shop, and it’s at no extra cost to you.

AmazonSmile is the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service. However, when you use AmazonSmile, Amazon donates 0.5 percent of your eligible purchase to the Foundation.

So, the next time you shop on Amazon, jump over to Smile.Amazon.com and select the Young Living Foundation as your designated charity. Tens of millions of products on AmazonSmile are currently eligible for donations. Just look for the AmazonSmile label, and you’re good to go!

2.Bring your family if you can

I heard a lot of people say they were glad they didn’t have their family there, myself, I wish I had mine there. Yes, your family can be a distraction and yes you will not be together the whole time, but the time you can have together will be fun.

Thursday-Arrival and Check-in

We arrived early Thursday morning so we wandered to the convention center and learned how to use the public transportation to get us from our hotel to the convention center.  It was close enough to walk, but depending on the time we had to get there or how tired we were helped make our decision to use the public transportation or walk.  At registered we had unlimited NingXia Red shots. How cool is that!!!!  20160929_134952

After that we grabbed a bite to eat at a cute little Italian cafe.

wp-image-1511317996jpg.jpg We rented a car so we headed to the corporate offices and warehouses to check them out. The corporate offices were fun and pretty.  Spend some time there if you can.  You can also order a few oils from there is you want and if they have them in stock.

20160929_151318

Then we rushed to the warehouse.  This was crazy.  The tours were all over so all we could do was stand in a very crowded room and try to order some items if we anted to wait for an hour to get them.  We decided not to since we had to get back and get ready for the evening welcoming dinner.  I would skip this unless you can do a tour or don’t mind waiting a LONG time in a small cramped room.

20160929_154746

The welcome semi formal dinner was  very low key.  Don’t worry about feeling under dressed or over dressed.  I saw people in jean shorts and then some were in VERY fancy gown. Wear what makes you feel comfortable.  I kinda wish I has wore what I originally planed but it was still fun to dress up since I don’t have many occasions to do it.

The dinner was over in about 45 min and we were welcome to hang out and meet other people.  However with a 3AM wake up that morning to catch my flight, I was tired and headed back to my room.  I shared a room with a team mate but we were giving our own room which was plenty big enough for a family. So other then the dinner, which was short, the rest of the day was family friendly. Of course if you pay for a second person, they are welcome to eat with you. I would just let them eat at one of the may places around there to eat. Or order in some pizza!!

Friday- Farm Day

The farm day would have been so much fun with my family.  Of course, take into consideration the age of your kids as well as their attention span, likes and dislikes.  For my kids, the farm would have been fun.  It would have been a very long day if you rode on the bus however that bring me to another point.  We were discouraged from driving to the farm ourselves.  Yes, it was a little bit of a drive(about 1 1/2 hrs each way) and coming home we were all tired, however the option to get there early before all the buses arrived would have been nice as well as being able to leave when we got tired would  have been great.

20160930_191345

Sorry I got off track, back to the farm day.  There were so many great things for a family to do.  They had a rock climbing wall, a little cowboy town you could play in, a playground, pony rides and games, paddle boats, a jousting tournament as well as the draft horse show. That’s not listing everything!!  Of course your kids may not want to do SEED to SEAL tour or listen to Gary Young speak, but this is were you join your team and hang with them for a while and then meet back up with your family later. You can always just drag your family along, but that’s up to you.  I know my daughter (age 9) and probably my son (age 6) would have enjoyed the  Seed to Seal tour.  They hear me talk about it all the time and know so much about Young Livings Seed to Seal process I think they would have liked seeing it first hand.

Saturday – Workshops and Closing Party

This would have been the day you wouldn’t get to spend much time with your family. However, depending on what hotel you are in, you may have a pool that they can hang out at. Plus there is some down time between the workshop sessions and closing party.  I am not big on party atmospheres and we were all pretty tired so we didn’t stay to late. But again that is a judgment call depending on what you like. We headed back to our hotel and got some gelato from the sweet shop in out hotel.

Sunday – Travel Home

This is the main reason we rented a car, our flight didn’t leave till 8PM so we had the whole day to hang out and sight see.  One of the girls on our team had been to Park City and said it was beautiful, so  we went and checked it out.  We stopped at the Olympic training Center and were fortunate enough to get to watch some of the Olympians  training. This is a great place to check out!!

Next we headed to the little main street of Park City and walked the street.  We had lunch at a great restaurant and grabbed some coffee as well before driving on to explore more.  The scenery was breath taking with all the trees changing color for fall.  It was a  wonderful relaxing day.

We then headed back down to Salt Lake City and checked out the Mormon Temple. It was Sunday so we could see much but it is massive. We had a little time left so we went back to our hotel and hung out in the beautiful lobby for a while before heading to the airport. As you can tell, this day would have been totally family friendly too.

We live close enough that we could have driven there in a very long one day trip.  I think if we could have gotten cheap airfare for our family I would have gone that route.  However, if you can drive or want to make it an  extended vacation there, I think that would be fun.    I am in love with the area and can’t wait to go back.

3. Bring an Extra Bag for all the Goodies you get.

I didn’t think I would need an extra bag but I was wrong.  We did get an amazing backpack from Young Living but if you are planning on getting any of the discount items at the farm,  you will need an extra bag.  I was able to get it all in the bags I bought as well as my VERY packed small suitcase but it was tight.

4. Enjoy the time and make new friends

This was my first time ever leaving my kids overnight. I am thankful that my hubby was able to be off from work and be with them, but it was still hard for all of us.  The first day they face chatted with me a lot and cried.  I looked at going home after the workshops on Saturday, which would have been fine, but glad I stayed.  They were doing better the 2nd day and by the 3rd it seemed they were doing pretty good because they knew I’d be home the next day.  I am so thankful I had the support of my friends during those sad moments. I made some amazing new friends on this trip as well and reignited some old friendships which was awesome.  The friendships I have made because of Young Living are priceless.

5. IT’S FREE!!!!!!!!

Of course there will be things that you would do different or would change but, remember this is a FREE gift to you from Young Living.  They don’t have to do this for us, but remember #1 they have a big heart and want to do this for you. They put lots of time and money into these retreats and try to give us the best experience they can.  No the Welcome dinner party was not a big fancy event, but it was so thoughtful.  I feel bad because I found myself complaining from time to time and now looking back I feel horrible for allowing myself to do that. This retreat was such a blessing and I am so grateful that I got to go on it.

Of course this may change from year to year but at least this was my experience and what I learned.  Please comment below if you have been to a retreat and have any tips or want to share your trip.  I’d love to hear other peoples stories.

Essential Oils, healthy Living, Seed to Seal

Young Living Is So Expensive!!

“Young Living essential oils are to expensive.  I’ll just pick some up at the health food store. It’s the same thing.  It is 100% pure essential oils too. It says so right on the bottle.”

Spa scene with natural cosmetics

I’m sure we have all heard this before.  But when we are talking about essential oils, there are generally 2 different categories; therapeutic-grade oils and those that are not!  It is that simple.

The internet is filled with so many articles and information, it’s easy to become a sceptic. If you Google essential oils, a lot of different things will come up, both good and bad.  The hard part is people do not always mentioning what brand or kind of oils they used to base their article on.  So if you read someone sharing about the risks of certain oils, or warning about an oil even being toxic, make sure you know what kind of oils they are talking about. If they were actually referring to non-therapeutic grade oils, they are right to warning you. However, if an oil is a true therapeutic-grade oil, that “same oil” that could be dangerous to you could be both safe and effective. When non-therapeutic brands of oils are mistaken for therapeutic ones and are applied with an intent to support your health, not only is that unlikely, but it can actually result in harming you.  This is why I do not recommend you getting oils at the grocery store or even the health food store. Most likely, these will not do much good for you other than smell nice, if that.

So how can you know if a essential oil is  therapeutic?

One of the things that determines the purity and therapeutic value of an oil is its chemical constituents.
A chemists can actually create some of the individual constituents in an oil! Scary right!?!  It could even smell the same and look pretty similar, but chemists are not able to successfully recreate complete essential oils in the laboratory. Remember, anything less than the pure essential oil may not produce the desired results and can, in some cases, be extremely toxic!

The constituents in essential oils are very sensitive and can be affected my many different things.
Everything from the parts of the plant where the oil was made, the condition of the soil, the kind of fertilizers (whether chemicals or not), geographic region, climate, altitude, harvest season, methods, and the distillation process.

20160930_163640

The majority of all the essential oils made in the world today are actually used by the perfume industry! Because all they want the oils for is their smell, the oils are made as quick and cheap as possible, using high pressure, high temperatures, and as well as adding different chemicals. These oils may smell just as good and cost much less, but they will lack most, it not all, of the chemical constituents necessary to produce therapeutic results.

I recently attended a class lead by Dr Cole Woolley .  He explained how a therapeutic grade essential oil should be produced:
A therapeutic grade essential oil is defined as one that is specially distilled from plants that are cultivated organically or grown wild in a clean environment. Plants should be from the proper botanical genus, species, and cultivar. No chemical fertilizers are added to the soil, and crop cultivation is free of herbicides and pesticides. Essential oils should be extracted by steam distillation at minimum temperatures and pressures, as was done in ancient times. No chemicals solvents are to be used in the extraction process. And during the whole process, vessels of the right material should be used.

Essential oils exposed to light will polymerize and lose both their fragrances and their beneficial properties. This is why genuine essential oils must be stored in light-proof containers or dark glass – like amber or blue.“
Just because an essential oils is stored in dark glass bottles,  that this doesn’t necessarily prove that they are therapeutic!

He just described Young Livings SEED TO SEAL process.  How cool is that!!!

Another great tip for helping know if an essential oil is a true therapeutic oil comes from Dr. Sharnael Wolverton . “If the label on the bottle of an oil says “Topical or External use only, Do not take internally, or Do not Ingest” then there’s your red flag that itʼs been adulterated with and/or is full of chemicals and is not safe”.
She also said that shockingly, “Most lavender oils that have been tested were actually found to contain the solvent Propylene Glycol, which is anti-freeze. This is NOT good for the body even TOPICALLY, let alone internally! If you go out to a garden and pick a peppermint leaf off the plant, it is safe to eat. If the oil was 100% pure like it says it is, then you should be able to ingest it.” Scary Right!!

Okay, now  let’s look at the world standards for essential oils.

AFNOR is a French agency that regulates the quality of thousands of French products, including essential oils. This is considered the international standard for oils. However, as AFNOR authorities have pointed out, their standard focuses only on a few ingredients (usually less than 6), while complete, natural oils are mixtures of hundreds of compounds!
In fact, no essential oil has ever been completely analyzed to reveal every constituent. Essential oils are so complex, it may never be possible to discover everything that is in even one of them!

DSC_0136~3

An example: For an oil to be called “Peppermint oil” (Mentha piperita) by AFNOR standards, it must contain 35-45% menthol, 10-20% menthone, 4-9% methyl acetate, and 3-7% 1,8 cineole. But these are only four compounds of hundreds present in a complete, natural oil. An unethical company could synthesize these four compounds, mix them in these proportions with a suitable filler oil and it would pass the AFNOR test. Such an oil would have the fragrance and taste like peppermint, but not its beneficial properties!  Although this is the only standard we currently have, fulfilling the AFNOR standard is not enough to prove if an oil is of therapeutic value. Again, the amazing properties of an oil also have to do with the way it was grown, harvested, distilled, and packaged.

Some perfume and food grade oils are entirely artificial, formulated in a laboratory by synthesizing and mixing the one, two, three main compounds that dominate its natural smell or taste.
In England for example, natural wintergreen oil is virtually non-existent. Instead, laboratory-produced methyl salicylate (the main ingredient in wintergreen) is bottled and labeled “oil of wintergreen” when, in fact, it was not derived from a wintergreen plant at all!  See all the VERY IMPORTANT constituent missing from the lab made one.

screenshot_20161012-162118

It’s scary that  food and flavor industries are most concerned with economics, which is the reason they focus more on quantity than quality. They put profit over the consumers health. Their interest is in producing oils as inexpensive as possible to maximize profits. This highly affects the process of making the oils.

There are (at least not yet) no standards for therapeutic-grade essential oils set by any government agency in North America. This makes labeling fraud a very common thing, leaving the consumer finding it hard to be sure they are getting therapeutic grade oils. If only you could know your grower, your distiller, your packager, and your distributor, because anywhere along this chain of delivery, oils can be compromised. Don’t stop reading now, there is hope 😉

Unfortunately, there is nothing dishonest about producing food or perfume grade oils. The problem comes when those kind of oils are bottled, labeled, and presented as if they were therapeutic, when they are not. Maybe someday there will be some kind of labeling regulations for essential oils but for now it’s up to companies to be honest and we’ve seen how well that goes.

Actually, a common thing to do, is to take a decent grade of essential oil and dilute it 90% to 95% with an odorless, colorless solvent. Now what once was a pound of good oil has becomes 10 or 20 pounds of diluted oil to be sold as if it were the original substance. This of course really multiplies their profit! Oils like that often have labels saying “genuine” or “100% pure”, which is allowed according to the regulations. Frustrating!!!!!!

Why is this allowed?

Because the little percentage of essential oils that is actually in the bottle might be “genuine” and “100% pure”. But let’s be real, an oil that diluted will not only have way less beneficial properties and could actually be harmful depending on what they diluted it with.

Let’s use Frankincense as an example. When you see a bottle labeled as “frankincense” for $10-20 for a full ounce, you can be sure it has been diluted. It’s just not possible to gather the resins (what frankincense oil is made from) from the Arabian and Somalian deserts, transport them to France or England to be distilled, and then import them to North America (or any other country) for that price AND maintain quality and purity. Remember these companies are all about profit as we’ve already learned.

IMG_20150715_224303

What’s crazy is, for every pound of frankincense distilled in the world, more than a dozen pounds are eventually sold! How is that possible????  Pure, unaltered frankincense should cost around $140 per ounce. In Biblical times, a pound of frankincense oil was more precious than a pound of gold. That is why the wise men brought it to Jesus. In fact, in ancient times it was called “liquid gold”.When only the common name frankincense is used and the Latin name is missing from the label, that is a clear warning that the content are probably not genuine. It certainly is not therapeutic and most likely highly diluted. How eles can one pound of distilled frankincense turn into a dozen?!?

Another example is jasmine essential oil:

c96f10222cafc00b8720247171d1d93a

It takes more than 3 million jasmine blossoms, plucked in the dark hours of early morning before sunrise to produce 1 pound of oil. A pound of true pure jasmine absolute can cost $1200 or more! A pound of synthetic jasmine can be produced for less than $5. Quite the difference!!

Producing the purest of oils can also be very costly because it may require several hundred pounds, or even several thousand pounds, of plant material to extract 1 pound of pure essential oil.

3589
One pound of pure melissa essential oil sells for $9,000-$15,000. Although this sounds extremely expensive, let me just inform you that it takes no less than 3 tons of plant material to produce that single pound of oil! Can someone make a profit off pure mellisaa essential oil that they are selling for $20 for 15ml bottle?? It just doesn’t add up.

Essential Oils are like Wines

Dr. David Stewart compares essential oils to wines. This is really a great comparison. In general, drug companies donʼt like natural products because they cannot be patented, neither can they be mass produces like they want them to. When you grow something, it takes time and you have to conform to natureʼs schedule to produce it. Drug companies like synthetics where they can control everything, including their production schedule and price… But this is were we have a problem, our bodies don’t do good with all these synthetic molecules that do not exist in nature.

An essential oil of a single plant species typically contains 100 to 400 different chemical compounds.  Essential oils in general, have thousands of different chemical compounds to be found among them. Because many of these constituents are in small amounts, there has never been even one essential oil completely analyzed. This makes the idea to synthetically manufacturing a complete essential oil is out of the question. Chemists have yet to account for all of the ingredients in just ONE bottle coming from one particularly species.

Another great example is orange oil.

3602

Orange oil has more than 150 known constituents. Researchers suspect there may be as many as 200 additional compounds in orange oil in traces as yet to be identified. The chemistry of an essential oil begins with its genetic recipe stored in the DNA of the plant, but the final product is a result of the place and manner of growth and harvest, as well as details of distillation. The composition of essential oils vary naturally, just as the taste and aroma of wines vary year to year from the same vineyard. No two batches of essential oils are ever identical in the proportions of compounds present. This is one of the reasons essential oils work so well. They are always changing a little bit with each harvest.

The fact that commercially produced products are always the same exact formulas, bacteria eventually develop resistance and then they donʼt work any more. Drug companies have tried to deal with this problem by creating stronger and stronger antibiotics and antiseptics. The problem is that such pharmaceuticals eventually become too toxic to be applied to people.

The Difference in Essential Oil Companies

We’ve seen how there is a big difference in how essential oils are made.

So why did I choose to use the Young Living oils?
Just to make it clear, this article is not intended to try to pressure you into buying anything. I did a lot of research about essential oils before I choose to go with Young Living.  Now I love to share the information I learned with others that are curious and interested in essential oils.

Young Living has been around for over 20 years old. Gary Young has been working with and researching essential oils for over 30 years and farming his whole life.   They have farms, distillers and offices all around the world. In fact they are the only company in the world that owns their own farms and have the same standards on all the farms!

Young Living is very open about their process of producing the oils and always encourage their members to come see the farms and the way they do things. I have been to the farm on Mona Utah and saw firsthand the process.  It is incredible!!!

20160930_191345

Young Living carefully picks the seeds from the best plants by hand.

wp-image-1158153239jpg.jpg

They also make sure to provide rich soil for the plants to grow strong. They even have high standards on who is working in their fields – it must be people that love their job, and think and speak positivity.

20160930_134407_001

When they are distilling the oils, they use a very gentle technique with low temperatures and low pressure to make sure the oils don’t loose their quality and amazing benefits.

wp-image-315128216jpg.jpg

Young Living also tests EVERY BATCH OF OIL that is made, yet only 28% of all oils are accepted, and sold. The rest are used on Young Living farms as a natural herbicide.
There are actually no pesticides or chemicals used on their farms. They use their own essential oils to keep the bugs and pests away. You may ask, ʻThen how do they stop weeds from growing?ʼ Well, along with their natural herbicides like neem oil, they have a crew that pulls all the weeds out by hand.

Young Living is also the only company that tests the oils on-site as well as sending them off to be tested. This enables them to identify the right time for the harvest as well as the right time to distill the oils. You can only do that by constantly pulling out samples (every 15 min). Through their constant testing they figure out the best time of the year, the best time of the harvest, and even the best time of the day to collect the plants. In addition they also have a third-party test their oils. This ensures the best quality and that each bottle can be traced back to its source.

The Young Living oils are never adultered with chemically, nor is anything added to them to extend the amount of oil. They are pure and the real deal. Because of the high quality, Young Living Oils do not have an expiration date like other companies. The exception to that is in Canada, where it is required by law to have an expiration date on them, even though they will not expire. In fact the oils will not go bad even if a thousand years went by. This is how, when they opened some of the old tombs in the Pyramids of Egypt, the essential oils they had placed there still had the same fragrance and qualities! Mind blowing right!

There you have it, the reason why Young Living is so expensive. Which now knowing all they do to ensure we are getting quality therapeutic grade essential oils, I think they are priced very good. There is a difference, just like with a $3 bottle of wine and a $300 bottle of wine.

In my opinion, Young Living sells the best Essential Oils on the planet, and that is why I choose them for my family.

If you want to try them out, I’d love to help you out. Joining Young Living is by far the best  investment for my families health, that I have ever made.

Fall Diffuser Blends

IT’S FALL!!!!!!!

Today is the first full day of fall……I don’t know about you but I am ready to put away the summer shorts and pull out my sweater and boots.  Don’t get me wrong I LOVE summer, but there is just something comforting about fall. Maybe it’s the big comfy sweater, or the cool evening snuggled under the blanket.  Maybe it’s the fact that the day light is shorter and we are forced to slow down and come inside a little earlier.   I don’t know exactly what it is but I am ready for it!!  I use to LOVE buying the fall scented candles, but now knowing how many harmful chemicals tare in them YUCK!!  I don’t ever want to use them again.   But I still want my home to smell like fall.  You now what I mean, cinnamon and spices, caramel and apples and those fall smells.  So what do I do???? I use my diffuser and essential oils to create those smells without all the harmful yuck.

Here are a couple of my favorite blend I like to do.

By using these essential oils and diffuser instead of wax products, I am helping keep my family safer.

Plus with a couple battery operated candles,  I still get the awesome ambiance that candles give.
